Volunteering at La Maison de la Sérénité

Volunteering improves the quality of life of the volunteers, the organizations, and the beneficiaries! These actions allow individuals, groups, and communities to provide services, build relationships, solve issues, and reconcile personal interests and values. These actions are performed free of charge and for the benefit of others. In those who make them, they promote an appropriation and symbolic of the world around them and their history. A study was conducted and revealed that the volunteers are in better physical condition and have a better quality of life than non-volunteers. If you are hesitant to give your time, think of your health! Do you want to find out more about volunteering at La Maison?

Message from our volunteers!

"I am pleased to share my volunteer experience at La Maison de la Sérénité. I retired at a young age and wanted to do some work while helping in the healthcare community and, I might add, to pay it forward. I completed a certificate in palliative care at the hospital where I was working: it was a new life in oncology. One day, a request for volunteers was published in our neighborhood newspaper. I then made an appointment to meet with the coordinator of volunteers at La Maison de la Sérénité. During the meeting, I told the coordinator my preferred choice for the type of volunteering work, which is what I've been doing for over ten years! Volunteering gives me great satisfaction. I share my knowledge and a smile with people I meet. Sometimes what families tell us moves us, brings tears to our eyes, or even allows us to share a joke or a recipe. One thing is for sure: I understand them a lot and am a better person because I can accompany them. When these people take a few moments with me to clear their minds, I realize that we all become confident at that moment. When I crossed the threshold of La Maison de la Sérénité, I felt a great kindness called Haven of Peace. This smiling team exudes empathy, respect, and kindness, but above all, attentiveness! The care is personalized for each patient. We even have an exceptional chef who, with his team, offers five-star meals while respecting the patient's needs. Even the management has its role to play in this solidarity chain. All together; kindness, transparency, events in La Maison's image, meticulous and rigorous accounting, and much-appreciated decor that embellishes the daily life of people who are staying at La Maison. This Maison, surrounded by nature with the river passing in front of our eyes, bringing tranquility and comfort, is a prestigious place. I am very fortunate to be a volunteer there!"

- Mrs. Hélène Baril, volunteer at the front desk of La Maison de la Sérénité.

"Even though I am often asked how I care for people at the end of their lives, volunteering at La Maison de la Sérénité brings me great happiness. I came to know this Maison a few years ago when an aunt was living her last moments here. But in 2015, I truly understood all the good when my neighbor and friend spent her final two weeks at La Maison. I saw her almost daily and slept at La Maison a few times. I loved the place! One morning when I woke up, a volunteer offered me a coffee. I was surprised and told him I was not the patient… when he brought me my coffee, he told me that this way, I could spend more time with my friend. At this moment, I understood that the volunteer's role allowed patients to receive more care. I told myself, «That's what I want to do in life!" Then, I signed up to volunteer and hopefully make a difference.

It is always with enthusiasm that I visit people at La Maison. I like to make them comfortable, to give them beautiful moments of happiness and peace. Volunteers at La Maison de la Sérénité provide quality time that complements the nursing staff's care.

This Maison's gentleness, peace, serenity, and mutual support are remarkable. It is gratifying to feel we are making life easier for patients and their loved ones at this time of transition. I am a loyal ambassador of the place because I see all the well-being that La Maison de la Sérénité provides to its patients, and the care provided is well adapted to the patient's needs and condition.

All volunteers at La Maison de la Sérénité are united in a common cause: to make people comfortable in their final moments and doing so with the utmost benevolence."

- Mrs. Danielle Mercier, healthcare volunteer at La Maison de la Sérénité
