A humanist movement that has inspired many similar undertakings in other regions of Québec and in other countries.

La Maison de la Sérénité is a place where :

  • Individuals receiving end-of-life care, in the company of their loved ones, can live their last days with dignity in a respectful and warm family environment.

  • We acknowledge that each individual has their own identity, based on their origins, culture, education, values, beliefs, aspirations, fears, etc.

  • We recognize that “each patient is an individual before anything else, and although they are dying, they are very much alive: Their suffering is global, which means that it encompasses physical, emotional and spiritual elements.” (Free translation from L’Art de mourir, by Marie de Hennezel and Jean-Yves Leloup)

  • The presence and support of loved ones or any others who are significant for the patient are encouraged. Loved ones are considered as members of the caregiving team, promoting quality of life and the evolution towards the end of life.

  • Helpers, volunteers, the caregiving team and other resources working at La Maison share the same intervention philosophy and the same concern for involvement and support.

A majestic and peaceful location on the Des Prairies river

La Maison‘s mandate consists in managing a family-type home that can house patients requiring palliative care.

La Maison is an alternative to a hospital or the patient’s home, a place where people can live their final days with dignity in the greatest possible comfort, surrounded by their loved ones, an interdisciplinary caregiving team and people who can be of assistance to them.

Located on a majestic and peaceful site on the Des Prairies river, in Laval, La Maison de la Sérénité can accommodate 12 end-of-life patients.

Above all, La Maison provides :

Quality care without compromise

At La Maison, each patient is treated with respect and dignity. The care is all-encompassing and compassionate, as our staff meets the individual’s needs. Our caregiving team is comprised of physicians, nurses, practical nurses, nursing assistants, a social worker and a number of volunteers. They all work together with the common goal to provide the greatest possible well-being to the patient in their final days, to alleviate their suffering and to support their loved ones. The patient or a member of their family must make a request for admission to the attending physician or a health care professional through a point of access to palliative care managed by staff of Cité-de-la-Santé hospital, in cooperation with the caregiving team at La Maison.

A quiet, warm environment

La Maison provides an environment conducive to tranquillity and serenity. In each room, a large window faces the river so that end-of-life patients can find a haven there while receiving support through their loved ones’ reassuring presence. La Maison also hosted an emotional wedding ceremony between a patient and her spouse, helping make their love everlasting.
